MacWorld ChargeHub review: Goodbye power strip, hello multi-device charging!

MacWorld

ChargeHub Review

MacWorld recently reviewed all of our ChargeHub models. Read the entire review below or read the article on MacWorld’s website here .

In my family, there are a total of six iOS devices: A pair of iPhones and iPads for the wife and me, and another pair of iPads for the kiddos. That means we’re often scrambling to find AC adapters and spare outlets when it comes time to charge everything.

Super charger

Enter ChargeHub, billed as “the power strip for the 21st century,” a bold claim that’s more than marketing hype. After all, for most smartphone and tablet users, it doesn’t make sense to use wall outlets and traditional power strips with bulky AC adapters when a few simple USB cables get the job done.

That’s exactly what this is: An inch and a half tall, 3.5-inch round polycarbonate puck that provides multiple USB ports from a single AC outlet. Weighing only half a pound, the charger accepts dual voltage 110-240V input, making it compact enough for international travel.

ChargeHub is available in three models, distinguished by the number of ports and how much power they output. The three-port, 25-watt X3 ($39.99 MSRP; $30 on Amazon) and the five-port, 40-watt X5 ($50; available on Amazon), but there’s also a seven-port, 44-watt X7 ($60; available on Amazon).

The six-foot, two-prong AC cable at the back of the unit is detachable, and conveniently includes a Velcro strap to reduce the amount of excess cables. That doesn’t help when plugging in multiple devices with stock Lightning cables, but the company sells 3.5-inch flat cables designed for this purpose; unfortunately, none are included with the X3 or X5, but a pack of four sells for $24.

Custom design

ChargeHub makes up for that stinginess by offering the ability to customize. Each model is available in your choice of eight colors: Black, white, red, blue, pink, purple, orange or green. (X7 is also available in clear, or with a square design.) But the customization doesn’t stop there.

Users are encouraged to swap out the company’s logo on the top with one of your own, courtesy of a web-based Design Studio. Here you can add photos (your own or from a large image gallery), add text, and export a PDF file to print at home. It’s a fairly basic, Adobe Flash-powered affair, but gets the job done.

Otherwise, ChargeHub delivers where it counts. Each port is capable of pushing a maximum of 2.4A for the fastest charging speeds currently available with iOS devices. The hardware is solid and well-built, and I liked the rubberized ring around the bottom that keeps the unit from sliding around on a kitchen counter.

Innovation & Tech Today calls ChargeHub “The Mother of All Phone Chargers”

We Review the Mother of all Phone Chargers: The ChargeHub

Remember the good old days of flip phones? You know, those indestructible pieces of mobile tech with a seemingly everlasting battery? Well, those days are gone. Nowadays, you’re lucky if your phone is at 50% before lunchtime. Probably because we use our phones as our personal radios, TVs, cameras, game consoles and, oh yeah, phones.

Compounding this problem, the old-fashioned phone charger won’t always be the solution to your dwindling battery. After all, in these primitive times, there are only so many outlets handy. Well, this inspired me to try out the ChargeHub.

As the name implies, the ChargeHub is a hub for charging. Just thought I should explain that. The device comes in a number of different styles, even allowing you to implement your own photos into the design. You can also customize the amount of USB ports for your individual ChargeHub, anywhere from three to seven. Additionally, the device comes with USB cables for each individual port.

One thing that definitely sticks out about the ChargeHub is the design. With all of its USB cables plugged in, the device has a charming octopus-like appearance. This design also allows for numerous devices to charge at once, perfect for a boardroom or party setting. Unless you’ve got seven devices to charge yourself. No judgement here.

But let’s get to the most important part of the ChargeHub: providing your phone with power. The device touts its ability to charge devices quickly with a 2.4 amp max output for every port. And, I must say, it delivers on this claim. The first time I plugged my phone in, I was (quite pleasantly) surprised to see that it was back to 100% in record time. Which could only mean one thing: time to unplug it, burn some battery life by watching some Netflix, and repeat the cycle.

From the design to the execution, I really enjoyed using the ChargeHub. In the current world of phone battery famine and overcrowded outlets, I think the ChargeHub is ideal for charging multiple devices in a quick fashion. And, as somebody that plays way too much Pokemon Go and is constantly listening to podcasts, I could definitely use the extra juice.

Newstips Review 4: ChargeHub X5

ChargeHub is a pointedly interesting product line because it so nicely exemplifies trade-offs. They sent us the X5 model, about the size of one of those little round black ashtrays that used to be everywhere, with 5 USB charging ports & an attachment point for 100-240 VAC power (cord is included) around its circumference. Each USB port delivers up to 2.4 Amps but the total can’t exceed 8 Amps. If you attach too many power-hungry devices at once, it goes into overload mode & you have to unplug some until it settles down. That total not equaling the some of its ports is one of the trade-offs; another is in the geometry, where the things you plug in get spread out around the hub, adding up to a big footprint (which may still be a better use of space than some alternatives). Bottom line: ChargeHub X5 uses one wall-wart-free power outlet to bring USB charging to as many as 5 pieces of your gear.
